Bangladesh Water Development Board has been playing an important role in socio-economic development of the area. Regular operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of various irrigation canals and other irrigation structures of GK Irrigation Project located in the area of Jhenaidah Power Division has greatly increased crop production and as a result food security of the country has been ensured. Recently, under the small rivers, canals and reservoirs re-excavation project (Phase I) in 64 districts, re-excavation work of 8 drainage canals in 6 upazilas of Jhenaidah district has been completed. The lives and property of the people of this area have been protected from river erosion by providing temporary protection at various places of Gorai river. Above all, the development of irrigation systems, re-excavation of rivers and canals, and the completion of protective measures to prevent river erosion have resulted in increased fish production, increased crop production, improved drainage systems, improved living standards, and increased economic transactions.
